Andi knew there was no way she could go to bed. Not after everything they’d just heard.

Alfonso always let them stay at the Grayling Lodge even though they had places here in town. It somehow made it easier to get away from their everyday life and focus on the task at hand.

Andi and Duke used Ranger’s SUV earlier. While the rest of the gang had ice cream, they picked up Duke’s 4Runner and then grabbed small travel bags for the weekend stay.

Then they headed back to the hotel. Duke insisted on following her, just in case.

As she stepped out of Ranger’s SUV into the lodge’s parking lot, she paused a moment and glanced around.

Why did she feel as if someone were watching her?

She scanned the cars but saw no one. Weird.

She shook off the feeling before stepping back inside with Duke. They headed down the hallway toward their separate rooms.

Andi reached her room first and paused. “I know what you’re going to do when you get back to your room.”

Duke’s gaze remained stony. “What’s that?”

“You’re going to look up Compassion Mission.” She nodded at her room. “Why don’t we look together?”

He hesitated just a minute before nodding. “Sure.”

She stepped into the room, Duke behind her. She went to a small dinette in the corner and grabbed her laptop. Duke pulled his chair around beside her and watched the computer as Andi searched for Compassion Mission.

There were a few vague references, but nothing that directly tied in with what Celeste may have been involved with.

She searched several different sites before finally sighing and leaning back in her chair. “I don’t know where else to look.”

Duke tried to hide his disappointment and ran a hand over his face. “Do you think that name was just a cover for something else?”

“I don’t know. I just keep thinking about assisted suicide. Would the name Compassion Mission fit that? Maybe.”

He ran a hand over his face again. “That’s what I thought also. I still just have a hard time seeing Celeste do this. Nothing makes sense to me right now.”

“It’s a lot to comprehend.” Andi pulled her hands from the computer and turned toward him, her gaze softening. “I’m just not even sure really what’s going on. Is Celeste trying to contact you? Why now? Or if this is all being set up by someone else, then why is it being set up by someone else? What’s their motive?”

“I’ve thought about those questions a thousand times, and I still don’t have any clues.” His gaze looked listless as he stared at the wall. “There’s nothing we’ve discovered yet that points to any answers.”

“Tomorrow is a new day. Maybe we’ll get the break we’ve been looking for then.”

“Maybe.” Duke’s gaze met hers. “Thank you for being a good friend to me throughout all of this, Andi.”

Her throat tightened. Was this his way of putting her in the strictly friend zone?

She’d felt the tension between them earlier. She’d seen in Duke’s eyes that he wanted to kiss her.
